response to Annons Questions

Adultery is when you committ and act of unfaithfulness or when you sell you body or services in this case she was unfaithful and it is considered so sinful because in that time and age religion was law so in this case she was breaking both things that were important to that society

The conflict of the story is that hester committed adultery and disgraced the society this effects the story because its shows how things were taken more seriously back in those times

Hester Prynne

Hello World,
I don't know you but you know me,
Or at least the A that you see,
I garden but you didnt know that,
I sow but thats not important.
You don't want to get to know me.
You only care about the A that you see.
It is a scarlet letter get over it
I've had enough of all the snit.
Not a hello or goodbye,
Just stares and weird looks,
Not a hug or a kiss
This feels like the story books.
You dont want to know me,
Just the A that you see.
I should be a rat and just tell
everyone what the want to know.
Who's my partner in crime
Who gave me this pregnant glow.
Thats would make you feel great
Then there would be two of us to hate.
No day goes by that I don't wonder
If im the only one.
Or are they in hiding,
hiding from what they have done.
They are cowards something I am not,
like a druggy hiding form the cops
While they are doing pot.
Well I am Hester Prynne.
Not the A on my chest
My name is Hester Prynne
Not that scarlet letter Pest.

Read the scarlet letter to learn more about
Hester and her life.

Hot off the press!

Response to arige's questions

1. Why do you think Hester Prynne does not want to tell anyone who she commited adultery with?
2. When  Roger Chillingworth visited Hester with meddicine for her and Pearl what characteristics did he show?
3. What are your thoughts of the law in the 1640s, giving death as a punishment for commiting adultery?
4. Why did Hester stay in Boston knowing that she would be isolated and that the people will have a negative thought of her forever?
5. What are the things that Pearl looks at that makes her notice her life is different from the other kids in Boston?

1) Hester Prynne refuses to tell anyone who she committed adultery with because she is trying to protect the person from what she goes through on a daily basis. She is faced with exclusion and depression because how the society thinks of this kind of behavior. I also think that she doesnt want her daughter to have to deal with double the ashame because her mom and her dad are both not accepted into society.

4) She doesnt want to run away from her problems she wants to face them. I think she is afraid that if she leaves her problem will come with her aswell so there ids no point in running.

Analysis of style and structure

                                             Analysis of style and structure

The authors use of diction was not favourable in my opinion. Often i found myself referencing back to my dictionary because i didnt understand. I believe that the theme of the story is dont judge a book by its cover because Hester seemed to be so gorgeous yet attended church every sabath and was greatly involved in the church community but in the end she recieved a scarlet A for adultery and a baby that no one knows who the father of it is.

The literary devices that were used in the story were repitition and aliteration. Repitition was use when Hester was with the doctor and he was talking about finding the man who did thid to her. he had said "but he will be known, he will be known, he will be known. I think this device was used here to really emphasize that even though he was mad at the fact that she had dishonored herself he was even more upset at the man who helped.

Setting Analysis

                                                       Setting Analysis

The story takes place in New england. The way I figured this out was by the way they spoke they spoke differently. I know the story takes place around the time of the 19 century because that was the time era where the thought of witches was brought up into concern. When Hester was starting to make the assumpsion that her daughter was a witch she referenced a woman by the name of Mistress Hibbons who was banished because she was caught practicing witch craft. The other reason I believe it was during the 19th century was because religion was law, now a days the law is based on things that are more practical. The place Hester lived in had to be of a relitively nice climate because she loves to garden and gardening is a repetitve accurance in the story.

Most memorable moment

                                               Most Memorable Moment.

I think the most memorable moment is when Hester was in front of the crowd of people in the market place. Hester Prynne was wearing the scarlet letter on her chest and holding her baby close to her. I think this was the rising action in the story because this was the big event that informed people of her horrible crime, and started the talk amoungst the towns people. This is the most memorable moment because it give us an inside to how Hester is feeling at the time. This is one of the best insides of the story because when she was under pressure I got to see her true self. She was extremely sad and felt as if she could crack at any moment  This made me feel empathy towards Hester because if I were in a senario where everyone had to know something that I would have rather kept a secret I would have felt the way she was feeling. This scene was also intense because someone who she had cared about greatly was in the crowd looking up at her with disbelief and disapproval. It was her ex husband. He couldnt believe what he was witnessing. Pearl was just a baby when this was happening so she was used as a shield to cover the scarlet A that not only scarred Hester's shirt but also her heart.

People were shocked and whispering intensly. This made Hester very anxious so anxious that she thought that what she had been experiencing was not real, that it was just a horrible nightmare. I think this would have been horrifying, like when you see a group of girls talking and you no they are talking about you but you cant do anything about it because they are more powerful. The author really emphasized the fact that she felt hopeless I think this was to help people understand how the character oppurates and to tell the reader a little bit about Hester. This scene shows me that she is not one to express her feelings and emotions openly.

If I were to compare this scene to anything in the world I would compare it to highschool life because it resembles it only with a little bit of a twist. Say if a girl does something that is not acceptable the whole school is talking about it the next day and she forever wears an imaginary A because everyone knows what she did. If a male were to do the same thing all would be forgotten. I think this is shown in this scene because she couldnt have made that baby alone yet she stands alone with an A on her chest for everyone to view.

I think that this is the most memorable part in the story because I have brought it into a context where I can understand it better. It just goes to show you that history does repeat its self because people still where an A and are still riticuled just not in such a harsh manner.

H.P diary

 Dear Diary,

Many things have happened since my walk of shame in the market place. I am still not accepted into this society but I do have my freedom which is good. I live with my daughter Pearl in a small cottage and survive off of my needling service. My daughter Pearl is an odd one, sometimes I wonder if she really is my daughter or if she is just possest by an evil spirit that has taken her over. She is a curse and a blessing all in one body. She has something not right about her but she is my child and I will love her no matter what.

I am keeping a secret from everyone, who this childs father is. I refuse to tell anyone because no one should have to face the tortue I have to on a daily basis and if he is not honorable enough to confess to his crimes then to heck with him. Besides I think I am better off raising this child by myself because my daughters father is a sinner.

Sometimes I cry when my daughter is not looking. Sometimes iI just cant keep it locked away I mean wearing this scarlet letter on my chest is a constant reminder of what I have to face everyday yes but when I am at home I feel to seek refuge yet cannot accompish this because my daughter is also a constant reminder. I just want to scream sometimes and let it all out but what would that do, just make people more skeptical of my motherly ablities or just convince them even further that I have gone insane. In my life you just cant win.

I have to be strong for my daughter and myself otherwise they win and I cant let that happen. Letting them win is like showing them im guilty and I diserve what I am getting. Sometimes I doubt whether this is reality or just a dream. I mean could people be so cruel and unreasonable. Am I the only one who is guilty of this crime in this society. That is a question I ask myself alot. But in this time and age religion is law.

It seems that now a days all that keeps me remotely comfortable is gardening and sowing I guess when I am gardening it distracts me from reality and it helps me realize that not everything in life is gray. The vibrant colours of the flowers I plant I envy for they have freedom to grow and have everyone see their beauty. while my life will forever stay the same where the people only see the red of the scarlet letter on my chest. Pearl seems to be mesmorized, by it I just dread the time where she is old enough that I will have to explain it.

Now I must go for I have things to do and people to see. It seems like this diary will be my parter, friends and family besides Pearl.

  Love H.P

Pearl Prynne

                                                                Character analysis

Pearl Prynne

Pearl Prynne is the daughter of the antagonist. She is also the foil character because she tends to provoke the mother Hester Prynne and allows her to share her true thoughts with the reader. It is said that pearl is no human in the story and it is said because religion is a great part of the novel and when the priest asked her who had made her she replied. "she had not been made at but had been plucked by her mother off the bush of wild roses that grew at the prison door." The priest had asumed that she would have mentioned the story involving the stork because that is the explanation many motherrs give their children when they ask where they came from. That quote does not show any signs of being inhuman to me it just displays that she has a wide imagination and can express her feelings openly. Pearl is also very protective of her and her mother. She displays this when her and her mother were walking in the village and kids on the street were planning to throw rotten fruit at them. As an instinct pearl automatically bent down and picked up pebbles in defense and began to pound them with the pebbles. This shows that she is also strong willed like her mother because there were way more of them than there were of her so it goes to show that she can fight when she needs to. Pearl is very bubbly and upbeat she is always skipping her way down the village. She is very provoking because she learned how to find peoples weaknesses such as her mothers and manipulate them. For example she pointed her finger at the scarlet letter on her moms chest and saw the ping of pain in her moms eyes and just continued to touch it and smile. This shows that she does not have much empathy for others because the closest person to her being her mother was hurt yet she felt no remorse or consideration. She is very clingy when she is around other people besides her mother. I think this is because she realizes that they are not accepted in community as they should be and no she is different. I believe she has a psychic ability. An example of this would be when she was with her mother and they were about to visit the minister because he was very ill and he was with the doctor she had said "Come away, or yonder old black man will catch you. he hath got hold of the minister already..." I think this shows that she has a psychic ability because she has not once spoken to this man yet it appears as if she knew many things about him. In my opinion I think pearl sturs up the story so much because she is not someone that would have been pictured to be apart of that time.

Hester Prynne

                                                            Character Analysis

 Hester Prynne

In my opinion hester prynne is one of the strongest and most influencial characters. She is the center of all that happens that is good as well as all that is bad. For example her irresponsiblility has graced her with a child by the name of Pearl. She is also used as a reference when it comes to teaching the children of the time what you should do and how people should live as moral beings instead of huligans. As her punishment she must be wearing at all time a scarlet letter A representing adultery in the highest degree. I think this letter brings out many character traits in Hester such as strength and loyalty. Even though she must wear the A at all times and face humiliation where ever she goes she embraces it as if something of daily life that everyone must deal with. She shows stength when she sows the scarlet A onto her clothing making sure that it is sown with great needle work. I think this shows strength because if I were to have sawn a letter of adultery on my clothing I would be trembling and wishing to get it over with as soon as possible, but she takes her time and gives the thing that is supposed to be something of horror great beauty. She also demonstrates loyalty when the priest asked her who had done this act with her because she could not have created this child alone. She refused to tell who it was because she felt as if no one should feel the shame and sorrow she felt. The man who had done this act with her would have gotten and equal sentence and she wouldnt have had to go through the suffering alone and she knew this and still insisted on not telling. She is also character with great compassion because she was in belief that her daughter was posessed and was not going to became someone she would admire in the future yet she still insisted on keeping her. She had a chance to give her up when the governor was afraid that Hester was to incompetent to properly raise the child. Hester is the antagonist in the story because even though she is not the hero everything ends up pointing back to her. Hester is interested in gardening and sowing. I think the reason being is because those are very quiet and independent hobbies. She is independent because she is excluded from society. She values religion even though she is in a predicament where she is no longer accepted. I think a stong character trait that is shown in Hester the fact that she is strong willed an example of this is when she had to drop off some gloves for the governor and the door man had said "Yea his honorable worship is within. But he hath a godly minister or two with him and likewise a leech. Ye may not see his worship now." and she simply replied "Nevertheless I will enter." Showing that she isnt afraid to stick it to the man no matter what the consequences and I also think this was shown when she refused to tell who she the child with. I think this character has put up a mask affabitility because even though she is strong she still feels strong on the outside she feels as though she could burst out at any moment and felt deep sorrow.
